Josef Zinnbauer lifts lid on why he chose Orlando Pirates

Orlando Pirates coach Josef Zinnbauer has revealed why picked Orlando Pirates over numerous other offers.

The club appointed the German tactician in December as a replacement for Serbian coach Milutin Sredojevic after Rulani Mokwena had taken over the reins on an interim basis.

How Josef Zinnbauer ended up at Orlando Pirates

Speaking on Monday, during the Buccaneers’ media day ahead of their clash against Mamelodi Sundowns, the former St Gallen coach said there was interest for his services in Africa and Europe.

“I got a call. Yes, we have phones in Germany, and emails and so on. But no, my phone rang and I said, ‘Hi’ and [the other person said], ‘I am from Pirates’,” explained Zinnbauer.

“It was the normal way. My agent then called me and said, ‘Hey, you can go to South Africa.’ But six weeks before I had other offers from Africa, and I said no, I didn’t like this [offer].

“Pirates is a good club, and this was important for me. In the last seven months, I had ten offers or so – from Cyprus, Turkey, many countries. But I waited because I had time, I had a contract in Switzerland, so it was easy for me.

“Then I had a good feeling that this was the one for me, and I felt I could make a good work here.”

Not about the money

Zinnbauer had been unattached since parting ways with St Gallen – where he spent two seasons – in 2017.

At the Swiss outfit, he had an indifferent stint, guiding the club to victory in only 25% of his matches in charge.

Asked why he opted to join the Soweto giants instead of what could have been more lucrative offers, the 49-year-old said he was not motivated by money.

“Maybe for you, when you need money, you follow the money. But I don’t follow the money,” Zinnbauer said.

“I could have gone to another club before to follow the money, but I had time for this. I didn’t spend all my money [from previous jobs]. I’ve had it in my bag.”

Zinnbauer is yet to taste defeat since taking over at Orlando Pirates, winning two and drawing once.

Pirates’ last outing saw them put four goals past Polokwane City registering their biggest victory in a year as they came off 4-1 victors away from home.

They now face a sterner test in the defending league champions, who visit Orlando Stadium on Wednesday night.
