The Springboks picked up just over half a World Rugby Rankings rating point for their Rugby Championship title-clinching 46-13 victory against Argentina in Salta but the 1.07 points awarded to England was enough for them to trade places with South Africa and move up to fourth.

England beat Wales, who needed to avoid defeat in order to knock the All Blacks off a top spot they have occupied since December 2009, and the result ensured Eddie Jones side moved ahead of Rassie Erasmus’ boys into fourth.

Japan reached their all-time highest rankings position with a 34-20 win over the USA in Suva that also sealed the World Rugby Pacific Nations Cup title for the Brave blossoms. The Rugby World Cup 2019 hosts moved into the top ten at the expense of Argentina and also jumped ahead of Pacific Nations Cup rivals Fiji.

Australia’s record win over New Zealand had no impact on the Wallabies rankings position as they remained sixth. The All Blacks lost rankings points but were able to hold onto top spot by virtue of England’s win over Wales at Twickenham on Sunday.

Wales stumble in attempt to make World Rugby Rankings history

Warren Gatland’s team took to the field at Twickenham knowing that a draw or victory would see them create history, but England were the more composed of the two teams and tries for Billy Vunipola, Joe Cokanasiga and Luke Cowan-Dickie plus 15 points from the boot of George Ford and an Elliot Daly drop goal saw them avenge their defeat to Wales in Cardiff in this year’s Six Nations.

George North and Wyn Jones added to Gareth Davies’ brilliant solo effort in a strong second-half performance but it was not enough for Wales to prevent their 14-match winning run coming to an end.
